Why is meiosis a necessary step in ual reproduction?

Meiosis is necessary to provide genetic variation. A key event is called crossover. This is when nonsister chromatids of logous chromosomes exchange genetic material (DNA) at sites consisting of high logy. This is a random process. This process is what makes us all unique because we are not going to experience the same crossovers.
