I am interested in learning about my genealogy?

I am travelling to Italy this summer and hope to find long lost relatives. All I have is a last name, and a county in Sicily. Is this impossible? How can I research my family history without people in my family knowing much other than potential counties/countries/names that were changed in Ellis Island?
